2014년 개정판이 나온 이후 5년 만에 제3판이 출판되었고, 제1부와 제2부로 크게 나누어 그동안의 새로운 지식들을 종합적으로 보완 및 정리하였다.
제1부는 교과서개념으로 기술하였고, 내용 또한 가장 전형적인 구조에 따랐다. 우선 양극성장애의 뿌리를 알 수 있게 기원과 개념의 변천을 다루었고, 역학을 종합하였다. 원인론에서는 유전학적, 신경생물학적, 뇌영상학적, 정신사회적 요인들을 골고루 접할 수 있게 구성하였다. 이후 임상양상 부문에서는 증상, 진단, 감별진단, 동반이환, 경과 및 예후 등이 심도 있게 기술되었고, 마지막은 양극성장애의 치료로서, 약물치료에만 치중하지 않고 그동안 불모지에 가까웠던 비약물치료와 심리사회치료도 포함하여 전체적인 균형감을 살렸다.
