▶ They were realities?yes, they must have been; people moved and things came and went in them; my dear mother, whom I had near forgotten; then my father, stern and upright, the servants, the nursery, all the familiar things of home. Then the front door and the busy streets, with traffic to and fro: I looked and marvelled, and looked half doubtfully again into the woman’s face and turned the pages over, skipping this and that, to see more of this book, and more, and so at last I came to myself hovering and hesitating outside the green door in the long white wall, and felt again the conflict and the fear.

▶ 맹인의 나라에서 외눈박이가 왕이다!(In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king) : 가상의 에콰도르 파라스코토페틀(Parascotopetl)을 등반하던 산악인 누네즈(Nu?ez)는 불의의 사고로 인하여, 세상과 단절된 어느 계곡 마을을 발견(?)합니다. 외부로부터 완벽하게 고립된 마을은 갓 태어난 신생아가 모두 실명하는 질병에도 불구하고, 살아남은 이들로 이루어져 있었습니다. 적지 않은 세월이 흐르자 이제는 시력이라는 개념 자체가 존재하지 않게 되었는데...?! 과연 시력이 없는 세상에 도착한 누네즈는 ‘맹인의 나라’에서 왕이 될 수 있을까요, 아니면 그들에게 필요 없는 능력을 지닌 장애인으로 여겨질까요?
1995년 출간된 눈먼 자들의 도시(Ensaio sobre a Cegueira)는 노벨문학상 수상작가 주제 사라마구(Jos? Saramago)(1922~2010)의 장편소설로, 소설과 영화(2008)를 통해 전 세계적으로 주목받은 바 있습니다. 정체불명의 전염병으로 인해 사람들이 시력을 잃어간다는 모티브는 80여년 먼저 출간된 눈먼 자들의 나라(The Country of the Blind, and Other Stories by H. G. Wells)(1911)와 흡사한데요, 허버트 조지 웰스가 외부의 접근이 어려운 폐쇄된 공간을 배경으로 했다면, 주제 사라마구는 전 지구적인 규모의 재앙이라는 점에 차이가 있습니다.
▶ So Nunez became a citizen of the Country of the Blind, and these people ceased to be a generalised people and became individualities to him, and familiar to him, while the world beyond the mountains became more and more remote and unreal. There was Yacob, his master, a kindly man when not annoyed; there was Pedro, Yacob’s nephew; and there was Medina-sarote, who was the youngest daughter of Yacob. She was little esteemed in the world of the blind, because she had a clear-cut face and lacked that satisfying, glossy smoothness that is the blind man’s ideal of feminine beauty, but Nunez thought her beautiful at first, and presently the most beautiful thing in the whole creation.

▶ THE CRYSTAL EGG. There was, until a year ago, a little and very grimy-looking shop near Seven Dials, over which, in weather-worn yellow lettering, the name of "C. Cave, Naturalist and Dealer in Antiquities," was inscribed. The contents of its window were curiously variegated. They comprised some elephant tusks and an imperfect set of chessmen, beads and weapons, a box of eyes, two skulls of tigers and one human, several moth-eaten stuffed monkeys (one holding a lamp), an old-fashioned cabinet, a flyblown ostrich egg or so, some fishing-tackle, and an extraordinarily dirty, empty glass fish-tank.

He was one of those people who do everything that is right and proper and sensible with inevitable regularity. He always wore just the right and proper clothes, steering the narrow way between the smart and the shabby, always subscribed to the right charities, just the judicious compromise between ostentation and meanness, and never failed to have his hair cut to exactly the proper length.

▶ 바이오테러리즘(Bioterrorism)에 대한 최초의 소설! : 도난당한 간균(桿菌)(The Stolen Bacillus)은 무정부주의자(The anarchist) ‘창백한 얼굴의 남자(pale-faced man)가 세균학자의 연구실(the bacteriologist)에서 아시아 콜레라(the Asiatic Cholera)가 든 시험관을 훔치는데 성공하면서 벌어지는 사건을 다루고 있습니다. 택시 기사에게 웃돈을 얹어주며, 황급히 도피하는 무정부주의자는 시험관으로 대체 어디서 무슨 일을 벌이려는 것일까요? 과연 세균학자는 무사히 시험관을 되찾을 수 있을까요?
▶ 실제 사건을 모티브로 한 실화(實話)! : 작중 등장하는 아시아 콜레라(the Asiatic Cholera)는 1817년 인도 캘커타에서 발원하여 동남아시아를 비롯해 동북아, 유럽, 미주 등으로 번진 실제 전염병 범유행(cholera pandemic)을 의미합니다. 또한 런던 왕립 천문대 인근에서 1894년 프랑스 무정부주의자 마티알 부르댕(Martial Bourdin)의 (실패한) 폭탄 테러가 있었는데, 작가 조지 웰스는 두 가지 사건을 교묘히 엮어 이듬해 도난당한 간균(桿菌)(The Stolen Bacillus)을 발표하였습니다.
▶ THE STOLEN BACILLUS. “It's a deadly thing to have in your possession,” he said, devouring the little tube with his eyes. The Bacteriologist watched the morbid pleasure in his visitor's expression. This man, who had visited him that afternoon with a note of introduction from an old friend, interested him from the very contrast of their dispositions. The lank black hair and deep grey eyes, the haggard expression and nervous manner, the fitful yet keen interest of his visitor were a novel change from the phlegmatic deliberations of the ordinary scientific worker with whom the Bacteriologist chiefly associated. It was perhaps natural, with a hearer evidently so impressionable to the lethal nature of his topic, to take the most effective aspect of the matter.

The Bacteriologist, hatless, and in his carpet slippers, was running and gesticulating wildly towards this group. One slipper came off, but he did not wait for it. “He has gone mad!” said Minnie; “it's that horrid science of his”; and, opening the window, would have called after him. The slender man, suddenly glancing round, seemed struck with the same idea of mental disorder. He pointed hastily to the Bacteriologist, said something to the cabman, the apron of the cab slammed, the whip swished, the horse's feet clattered, and in a moment cab, and Bacteriologist hotly in pursuit, had receded up the vista of the roadway and disappeared round the corner.

But the bother is, I shall have all the trouble and expense of preparing some more.
