(This Misery of Boots by H. G. Wells)(1907)은 허버트 조지 웰스(H. G. Wells)(1866~1946)가 사회주의(socialism)를 옹호하기 위해 집필한 정치 소책자(political tract)로 , 작가가 1903년부터 1908년까지 소속되어 있던 영국 사회주의 조직(British socialist organisation) 파비안 소사이어티(Fabian Society)에서 2년 전 발간한 부츠의 비극(This Misery of Boots)(1905)의 확장개정판입니다. (The World As Boots And Superstructure)를 비롯해 부츠가 아프지 않은 사람들(People Whose Boots Don’t Hurt Them), 분쟁이 발생하는 지점(At This Point A Dispute Arises), 사회주의는 가능한가?(Is Socialism Possible?), 사회주의는 혁명을 의미한다(Socialism Means Revolution)까지 총 5장으로 구성되어 있습니다. ▶ My friend was a realistic novelist, and a man from whom hope had departed. I cannot tell you how hope had gone out of his life; some subtle disease of the soul had robbed him at last of any enterprise, or belief in coming things; and he was trying to live the few declining years that lay before him in a sort of bookish comfort, among surroundings that seemed peaceful and beautiful, by not thinking of things that were painful and cruel. And we met a tramp who limped along the lane.

▶ We agreed that to a very great majority of people in this country boots are constantly a source of distress, giving pain and discomfort, causing trouble, causing anxiety. We tried to present the thing in a concrete form to our own minds by hazardous statistical inventions. “At the present moment,” said I, “one person in ten in these islands is in discomfort through boots.”

▶ But it is a long way from recognising that there must be a certain picturesque and interesting variety in this matter of foot-wear, to the admission that a large majority of people can never hope for more than to be shod in a manner that is frequently painful, uncomfortable, unhealthy, or unsightly. That admission I absolutely refuse to make. There is enough good leather in the world to make good sightly boots and shoes for all who need them, enough men at leisure and enough power and machinery to do all the work required, enough unemployed intelligence to organise the shoemaking and shoe distribution for everybody. What stands in the way?

▶ We have to think about Socialism, read about it, discuss it; so that we may be assured and clear and persuasive about it. We have to confess our faith openly and frequently. We must refuse to be called Liberal or Conservative, Republican or Democrat, or any of those ambiguous things. Everywhere we must make or join a Socialist organisation, a club or association or what not, so that we may “count.” For us, as for the early Christians, preaching our gospel is the supreme duty. Until Socialists can be counted, and counted upon by the million, little will be done. When they are?a new world will be ours.

▶ THE COMING OF BL?RIOT(July, 1909). From my garden I look straight upon the Channel, and there are whitecaps upon the water, and the iris and tamarisk are all asway with the south-west wind that was also blowing yesterday. M. Bl?riot has done very well, and Mr. Latham, his rival, had jolly bad luck. That is what it means to us first 2of all. It also, I reflect privately, means that I have underestimated the possible stability of aeroplanes. I did not expect anything of the sort so soon. This is a good five years before my reckoning of the year before last.

▶ THE GREAT STATE. For many years now I have taken a part in the discussion of Socialism. During that time Socialism has become a more and more ambiguous term. It has seemed to me desirable to clear up my own ideas of social progress and the public side of my life by restating them, and this I have attempted in this essay. In order to do so it has been convenient to coin two expressions, and to employ them with a certain defined intention. They are firstly: The Normal Social Life, and secondly: The Great State. Throughout this essay these expressions will be used in accordance with the definitions presently to be given, and the fact that they are so used will be emphasised by the employment of capitals. It will be possible for anyone to argue that what is here defined as the Normal Social Life is not the normal social life, and that the Great State is indeed no state at all. That will be an argument outside the range delimited by these definitions.

▶ IS THERE A PEOPLE? Of all the great personifications that have dominated the mind of man, the greatest, the most marvellous, the most impossible and the most incredible, is surely the People, that impalpable monster to which the world has consecrated its political institutions for the last hundred years. It is doubtful now whether this stupendous superstition has reached its grand climacteric, and there can be little or no dispute that it is destined to play a prominent part in the history of mankind for many years to come. There is a practical as well as a philosophical interest, therefore, in a note or so upon the attributes of this legendary being. I write “legendary,” but thereby I display myself a sceptic. To a very large number of people the People is one of the profoundest realities in life. They believe?what exactly do they believe about the people?

▶ THE IDEAL CITIZEN. Our conceptions of what a good citizen should be are all at sixes and sevens. No two people will be found to agree in every particular of such an ideal, and the extreme divergences upon what is necessary, what is permissible, what is unforgivable in him, will span nearly the whole range of human possibility and conduct. As a consequence, we bring up our children in a mist of vague intimations, in a confusion of warring voices, perplexed as to what they must do, uncertain as to what they may do, doomed to lives of compromise and fluctuating and inoperative opinion.

(The New Teaching of History by H. G. Wells)(1921)은 허버트 조지 웰스(H. G. Wells)(1866~1946)가 출간한 생명과 인류의 평범한 역사가 되는 것(Being a Plain History of Life and Mankind) : 세계사 대계(The Outline of History)(1920)의 후속작입니다. (With a Reply to some Recent Criticisms of The Outline of History)는 이를 의미합니다. (Historians and the Teaching of History)을 시작으로 클래식 쪽의 목소리(A Voice from the Classical Side), 두 명의 가톨릭 비평가(Two Catholic Critics), 그리고 더 나은 역사 교육에 대한 희망(The Hope of a Better Teaching of History)까지 총 4장으로 구성되어 있습니다. (The Whole Story of Man) (Being a Plain History of Life and Mankind) : 세계사 대계(The Outline of History)(1920)는 허버트 조지 웰스(H. G. Wells)(1866~1946)의 역사서(history book)입니다. (The origins of the Earth)부터 웰스가 직접 경험한 제1차 세계 대전(The Great War)(1914~1918)까지 세계역사를 연대기별로 일목요연하게 정리해 격주로 연재하기 시작하였습니다.

▶ Historians and the Teaching of History. For the better part of three years the writer of these notes has been occupied almost entirely in an intensely interesting enterprise. He has been getting his own ideas about the general process of history into order and he has been setting them down, having them checked by various people, and publishing them as a book, The Outline of History, which both in America and Europe has had a considerable vogue. In volumes or in complete sets of parts it has already found over two hundred thousand purchasers; it is still being bought in considerable quantities, and it is being translated and published in several foreign languages; it is quite possible that it has sufficiently interested almost as many people to read it through as it has found purchasers to take the easier step of buying it.

▶ A Voice from the Classical Side. The feud which finds expression in Mr. A. W. Gomme’s pamphlet is one of much older origin than the publication of The Outline of History. Mr. Gomme is a teacher of the Greek language, and it is thirty years and more since I first attacked the imposture of the Greek teaching in our public schools. Long before I sank below the possibility of serious consideration by my fellow-countrymen by becoming a novelist, I was a writer upon education; and many of the novels I have written, since, like most novels from the Book of Tobit onward, they tell the story of youth going out into the world, have reflected strongly on education.

A. W. 곰(A. W. Gomme) 씨의 팜플렛에서 표현되는 불화는 세계사 대계(The Outline of History)의 출판보다 훨씬 더 오래된 기원 중 하나입니다.

▶ Two Catholic Critics. It is a relief to turn from the vanity and peevishness of Mr. Gomme to two more serious antagonists. Mr. Belloc is something of a special pleader, and both he and Dr. Downey forgo few controversial advantages. Dr. Downey is not ashamed to write of my “showman’s gestures” and so forth, but they both have minds and tempers that are disciplined; they are intelligently interested in The Outline of History as a whole; a passionate objection to my existence does not appear among their motives. They realise I have a definite standpoint and they state an understandable difference.

(Being a Plain History of Life and Mankind) : 세계사 대계(The Outline of History)(1920)의 후속작입니다.

▶ 나와 인연을 맺은 이들 중에 위대한 사람(the greatest man I have ever known with any degree of intimacy)! (The Story of a Great Schoolmaster by H. G. Wells)(1924)는 허버트 조지 웰스(H. G. Wells)(1866~1946)가 집필한 수많은 저서 중에서 ‘유일한 전기(the only biography Wells wrote)’입니다. 작가는 샌더슨이 혁신적인 교장(an innovative schoolmaster)이자, 기독교에 충실한 사회적, 종교적 사상가(social and religious thinker)이며, 오운들 스쿨(Oundle School)이 인간의 필요와 관련된 문제를 해결하고 창의성, 협력 및 진리에 대한 과학적 탐구를 강조하는 학교(schools dedicated to solving problems related to human needs and emphasizing creativeness, cooperation, and the scientific search for truth)라고 극찬하였습니다.

▶ Sanderson the Man. Of all the men I have met?and I have now had a fairly long and active life and have met a very great variety of interesting people?one only has stirred me to a biographical effort. This one exception is F. W. Sanderson, for many years the headmaster of Oundle School. I think him beyond question the greatest man I have ever known with any degree of intimacy, and it is in the hope of conveying to others something of my sense not merely of his importance, but of his peculiar genius and the rich humanity of his character, that I am setting out to write this book.

▶ The Re-establishment of Relations Between School and Reality. In the previous chapter I have told how Sanderson was taught by his laboratories and library the possibility of a new type of school with a new spirit, and how he grew to realise that an organisation of such new schools, a multiplication of Oundles, must necessarily produce a new spirit in social and industrial life. Concurrently with that, the obvious implications of applied science were also directing his mind to the close reaction between schools and the organisation of the economic life of the community.

▶ The War and Sanderson's Propaganda of Reconstruction. The disaster of the great war came to Sanderson as a tremendous distressful stimulant, a monstrous and tragic turn in human affairs that he had to square with his aims and teaching. He had had our common awareness of its possibility, and yet when the crash came it took him, as it took most of us, by surprise. At first he accepted the war as a dire heroic necessity. This aggression of a military imperialism had to be faced valiantly. That was how he saw it. Both his sons joined up at the earliest possible moment, and the school braced itself up to train its senior boys as officers, to help in the production of munitions, to produce aviators, gunners and engineers for the great service of the war.

▶ The Last Lecture. Sanderson's propaganda of this idea of the possible reorganisation of the world through schools came to an abrupt end in the summer of 1922. He died suddenly of heart failure in the Botanical Theatre of University College, London, at the end of an address to the National Union of Scientific Workers. He had chosen as the title of the address, 'The Duty and Service of Science in the New Era,' and it was in effect a recapitulation of his most characteristic views. He attached considerable importance to the delivery and he made unusual preparations for it.

▶ I must confess that the organized Socialist movement, all the Socialist societies and leagues and federations and parties together in England, seem to me no more than the rustling hem of the garment of advancing Socialism. For some years the whole organized Socialist movement seemed to me so unimportant, so irrelevant to that progressive development and realization of a great system of ideas which is Socialism, that, like very many other Socialists, I did not trouble to connect myself with any section of it. I don’t believe that the Socialist idea is as yet nearly enough thought out and elaborated for very much of it to be realized of set intention now.

▶ In relation to all these most intimate aspects of life, Socialism, and Socialism alone, supplies the hope and suggestions of clean and practicable solutions. So far, Socialists have either been silent or vague, or?let us say?tactful, in relation to this central tangle of life. To begin to speak plainly among the silences and suppressions, the “find out for yourself” of the current time, would be, I think, to grip the middle-class woman and the middle-class youth of both sexes with an extraordinary new interest, to irradiate the dissensions of every bored couple and every squabbling family with broad conceptions, and enormously to enlarge and stimulate the Socialist movement at the present time.

▶ I do not think that the general reader at all appreciates the steady development of Socialist thought during the past two decades. Directly one comes into close contact with contemporary Socialists one discovers in all sorts of ways the evidence of the synthetic work that has been and still is in process, the clearing and growth of guiding ideas, the qualification of primitive statements, the consideration, the adaptation to meet this or that adequate criticism. A quarter of a century ago Socialism was still to a very large extent a doctrine of negative, a passionate criticism and denial of the theories that sustained and excused the injustices of contemporary life, a repudiation of social and economic methods then held to be indispensable and in the very nature of things.

▶ Now what sort of contract will the Socialist state require for marriage? Here again there are perfectly clear and simple principles. Socialism states definitely what almost everybody recognizes nowadays with greater or less clearness, and that is the concern of the State for children. The children people bring into the world can be no more their private concern entirely, than the disease germs they disseminate or the noises a man makes in a thin-floored flat.

(The Door in the Wall, and Other Stories by H. G. Wells)(1906)은 벽 속의 문(The Door in the Wall)을 포함해 8편의 단편이 실린 허버트 조지 웰스(H. G. Wells)(1866~1946)의 단편집입니다. (The Country of the Blind)(1911)입니다. B

To him at least the Door in the Wall was a real door leading through a real wall to immortal realities. Of that I am now quite assured.

(The Door in the Wall) :

▶ They were realities?yes, they must have been; people moved and things came and went in them; my dear mother, whom I had near forgotten; then my father, stern and upright, the servants, the nursery, all the familiar things of home. Then the front door and the busy streets, with traffic to and fro: I looked and marvelled, and looked half doubtfully again into the woman’s face and turned the pages over, skipping this and that, to see more of this book, and more, and so at last I came to myself hovering and hesitating outside the green door in the long white wall, and felt again the conflict and the fear.

(The Country of the Blind by H. G. Wells)(1911)는 실명(失明, blindness)이란 흥미로운 소재를 활용한 허버트 조지 웰스(H. G. Wells)(1866~1946)의 단편 소설(Wells's short stories)입니다.

▶ 맹인의 나라에서 외눈박이가 왕이다!(In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king) : 가상의 에콰도르 파라스코토페틀(Parascotopetl)을 등반하던 산악인 누네즈(Nu?ez)는 불의의 사고로 인하여, 세상과 단절된 어느 계곡 마을을 발견(?)

(The Country of the Blind, and Other Stories by H. G. Wells)(1911)와 흡사한데요, 허버트 조지 웰스가 외부의 접근이 어려운 폐쇄된 공간을 배경으로 했다면, 주제 사라마구는 전 지구적인 규모의 재앙이라는 점에 차이가 있습니다.

▶ So Nunez became a citizen of the Country of the Blind, and these people ceased to be a generalised people and became individualities to him, and familiar to him, while the world beyond the mountains became more and more remote and unreal. There was Yacob, his master, a kindly man when not annoyed; there was Pedro, Yacob’s nephew; and there was Medina-sarote, who was the youngest daughter of Yacob. She was little esteemed in the world of the blind, because she had a clear-cut face and lacked that satisfying, glossy smoothness that is the blind man’s ideal of feminine beauty, but Nunez thought her beautiful at first, and presently the most beautiful thing in the whole creation.
