화가 지망생 소녀 수와 존시는 예술가 마을인 뉴욕 그리니치 빌리지에서 공동생활을 한다. 몸이 약한 존시는 폐렴에 걸리고 곧 죽을 거라는 부정적인 생각을 한다. 수는 존시에게 끊임없는 격려로 용기를 주지만 존시의 부정적인 말 때문에 자꾸만 힘들어한다. 존시는 창문 밖에서 보이는 담쟁이 잎을 자신과 동일시하면서 담쟁이 잎이 다 떨어지면 자기도 죽을 거라는 몹쓸 생각을 한다. 수는 이웃집 베어먼 영감에게 존시에 대한 이야기를 한다. 그리고 그날 밤 폭풍우가 매섭게 몰아쳤지만 옆집 담쟁이 덩굴은 끝끝내 살아있고 단 하나의 잎사귀만은 끝까지 떨어지지 않았다. 의사가 존시가 고비를 넘기고 회복되었다는 말을 전한다. 존시는 자신의 잘못된 생각을 반성하고 삶에 대한 의지를 찾는다. 하지만 그 때 옆집 베어먼 영감이 갑자기 폐렴을 앓고 죽는다. 존시가 완전히 회복되자 수는 떨어지지 않은 담쟁이 덩굴잎의 진실을 전한다. 베어먼 영감이 절망에 빠진 존시에게 희망을 주기 위해 밤새도록 폭풍우를 맞으며 담쟁이 잎을 그리고 죽은 것이다.

At its front flowed the tranquil river its surface painted with cloud-forms and the reflections of drifting arks and stone-boats behind it rose the woody steeps to the base of the lofty precipice from the top of the precipice frowned a vast castle its long stretch of towers and bastions mailed in vines beyond the river a league to the left was a tumbled expanse of forest-clothed hills cloven by winding gorges where the sun never penetrated and to the right a precipice overlooked the river and between it and the hills just spoken of lay a far-reaching plain dotted with little homesteads nested among orchards and shade trees. The whole region for leagues around was the hereditary property of a prince whose servants kept the castle always in perfect condition for occupancy but neither he nor his family came there oftener than once in five years. When they came it was as if the lord of the world had arrived and had brought all the glories of its kingdoms along and when they went they left a calm behind which was like the deep sleep which follows an orgy.

신데렐라(Cinderella)는 동화의 주인공이자 동명의 동화 제목이다. 1697년 샤를 페로가 《교훈이 담긴 옛날 이야기 또는 콩트》 라는 모음집에 다른 작품들과 함께 수록하여 출판하였다. 정확한 제목은 《상드리용 또는 작은 유리신》(Cendrillon ou la petite pantoufle de verre)이다. 그림 형제 또한 1812년 이 이야기를 자신들의 작품집에 〈Aschenputtel〉라는 제목으로 수록했다. 17세기 초에 출판된 잠바티스타 바실레의 민화집 《펜타메로네》(Pentamerone)에도 체네렌톨라(Cenerentola)라는 제목으로 수록되어 있다. 이외에도 세계 각국에 신데렐라에 해당하는 이야기가 존재하고 특히 9세기의 중국의 민담집 유양잡조에 기록되어 있어 화제거리가 되기도 하였다. 한국판으로는 콩쥐팥쥐가 이에 해당한다. 착하고 예쁜 신데렐라는 비록 귀족의 딸이나 새엄마의 학대와 배다른 두 언니들의 심술로 하녀와도 같은 혹독한 나날을 겪고 있다. 그러던 중 요정 대모의 도움으로 신데렐라도 왕궁의 무도회에 갈 수 있게 된다. 요정 대모가 마술을 사용하여 그녀에게 옷과 보석 마차를 마련해 주었기 때문이다. 그리고 또한 세상에서 가장 예쁜 유리신을 한 켤레 주었다. 다만 자정이 지나면 모든 마술이 사라진다. 무도회에서 신데렐라의 아름다움은 왕자의 마음을 사로잡았다. 첫날밤에는 23시 45분에 궁을 떠나 아무 문제가 생기지 않았다. 하지만 다음날 밤에 더 아름다운 치장을 하고 무도회에 다시 온 신데렐라는 왕자와의 사랑의 대화에 빠져 24시의 첫 종소리가 울리기 시작할 무렵에야 정신을 차릴 수 있었다. 왕자에게 자신의 하녀 같은 모습이 드러날까봐 너무 서두른 바람에 신데렐라는 유리신 한 짝을 잃고 만다. 이 유리신을 주어 모은 왕자는 정체를 알 수 없었던 이 여자를 되찾기 위해 유리신을 전국의 모든 여자들에게 신겨보라는 명령을 내린다. 우여곡절 끝에 마침내 신데렐라가 유리신의 주인임이 밝혀져 왕자와 행복한 결혼식을 올리고 착한 신데렐라는 자신에게 가혹했던 두 언니들을 용서한다.

잠자는 숲 속의 미녀(-美女)(프랑스어 La Belle au Bois dormant)는 고전 동화이다. 샤를 페로의 동화집 및 그림 동화에 수록되었다. 페로는 1697년 《어미 거위 이야기》에 이 동화를 수록했다. 페로 이전인 1634년에 발간된 잠바티스타 바실레의 《Pentamerone》 중 39장 〈해 달 그리고 탈리아〉(Sole Luna e Talia)에도 이 이야기의 요소가 포함되어 있다. 1812년 그림 형제는 독일 북부 포메라니아 지방의 전래 동화를 바탕으로 이 이야기를 자신들의 저서에 수록하였다. 톨킨 교수는 페로의 문화적 존재감은 굉장히 보편적이라 만약 동화를 이름 대라고 질문하면 대부분의 사람들이 페로의 모음집 중의 9개의 이야기 중 하나를 인용할 것이라 언급하였다. 그러나 톨킨의 세대 이후 가장 유명한 "잠자는 숲 속의 미녀"는 월트 디즈니의 만화영화가 되었고 이는 페로의 원작에 기초를 둔 차이콥스키의 발레만큼이나 주목을 받았다.

왕자와 거지(The Prince and the Pauper)는 미국의 문호 마크 트웨인이 46세 때 (1881년)에 발표한 작품으로 12~13세기에 북유럽에서 전해 오던 왕자와 시종 이라는 전설을 바탕으로 하여 쓴 사회 풍자소설이다. 톰 캔티는 거지 술중독자 존 캔티의 아들로 오팔가의 빈민가에 태어났고 에드워드는 영국의 국왕 헨리 8세의 아들로 궁전에서 태어났는데 톰과 에드워드는 같은 해 같은 날에 태어났다. 톰은 아버지 존 캔티의 강요로 동냥생활을 했으나 같은 마을에 사는 앤드루라는 신부에게 가서 책을 읽거나 라틴어를 배웠다. 책을 읽으면서 톰은 왕자를 동경하게 되었다. 왕자를 동경하던 톰은 어느 날 오팔 가를 벗어나 왕자가 사는 궁전에 오게되었다. 거지 톰을 본 문지기는 톰에게 거칠게 폭행을 가했다. 그것을 본 왕자가 와서 문지기 병사를 엄하게 꾸짖고 톰을 자기의 방으로 데리고 좋은 음식을 가져오라고 명령하여 톰이 마음껏 먹도록 하고 톰과 이야기를 하면서 왕자는 톰의 생활에 흥미를 느끼고 서로 옷을 바꾸어 입자고 톰에게 제안하고 톰과 에드워드 왕자는 서로 옷을 바꾸어 입었다.
