허민의 시는 자유시를 중심으로 시조, 민요시, 동요, 노랫말과 합창극에 이르기까지 다양한 갈래에 걸쳐있다. 그는 주로 산·마을·바다·강 등 자연과 민속을 시의 제재로 삼았으며 주제는 막연한 소년기 정서에서부터 농촌을 중심으로 민족 현실에 대한 다채로운 깨달음과 질병에 맞서 싸우는 한 개인의 실존적 고독 등을 표현하고 있다.
