An X-ray, or X-radiation, is a penetrating form of high-energy electromagnetic radiation. Most X-rays have a wavelength ranging from 10 picometers to 10 nanometers, corresponding to frequencies in the range 30 petahertz to 30 exahertz (30×1015Hz to 30×1018 Hz) and energies in the range 124 eV to 124 keV. X-ray wavelengths are shorter than those of UV rays and typically longer than those of gamma rays. In many languages, X-radiation is referred to as R?ntgen radiation, after the German scientist Wilhelm Conrad R?ntgen, who discovered it on November 8, 1895. He named it X-radiation to signify an unknown type of radiation. Spellings of X-ray(s) in English include the variants x-ray(s), xray(s), and X ray(s).

X선촬영으로 골절의 유무 그 위치 체내 이물질의 검출 , 조영제造影劑를 인위적으로 사용하는 진단법에 사용. X선에는 특정의 물질에 형광螢光을 발산시키는 작용이 있기 때문에 투시透視가 가능, 그래서 심장, 위, 장 등 장기의 크기, 운동의 관찰에 사용. 양자量子에너지가 높게 조직을 통과할 때, 일차 이차광전자에 의한 이온화작용을 하기 때문에 여러 병적상태의 치료에 이용. 최근에는 초음파 단순 엑스레이 및 시티 엠알아이 등 여러 장비로 의학에 사용함.
