Omjee the Wizard(Korean Folk Stories)

《Omjee the Wizard(Korean Folk Stories)》는 미국 Milton Bradley사(1925년) 초판본으로 미국인 선교자이며 언어학자인 헐버트가 한국에 체류하는 동안 채집한 것을 영어 동화로 옮긴 것이다. 우리나라 동화는 당시 전무할 정도로 많지 않았던 아동문학 중 영문판으로 매우 귀중한 희귀 자료라고 할 수 있다.
모두 17편을 수록하고 있는데 신데렐라나 이솝우화를 연상시키는 내용으로 여러 가지 컬러 도판과 함께 실었다. ‘Sotkary’라는 한 소년이 태평양을 건너가는 것으로 시작하여 우리나라 전통 방식인 ‘온돌방’이나 ‘지게(jiggy)’ 등 과거 생활 풍습도 잘 묘사되어 있다. 이것은 보고 체험한 우리 문화를 외국에 알리고 소개하려는 취지로도 엿보이는 대목이다.
한국을 사랑했고 교육에 남다른 심혈을 기울였던 헐버트 박사는 1950년에 건국훈장 독립장을 추서 받았다.

An attempt has here been made to conserve the flavor of the Korean story and to put it in language well within the reach of children between the ages of six and thirteen.

"But if a man had a lot of money," said one of the other boys, "he would surely have friends." "Perhaps so," said Omjee. "But if they were the right kind of friends he would have them even if he did not have any money."

Tokgabbies are the Korean fairies. They are not like our fairies. They are like little black goblins and they like to make mischief all the time. Sometimes they are good, however, as the story which Omjee told will show.
